Built in 1923 this 893 foot long scenic ‘dark’ boat ride lasted eight minutes.

The basic concept is akin to that of the early Scenic Railways, in that it was both educational and entertaining. An artificial river meanders through caves and tunnels, where theatrical scenes or tableaux are revealed. The decorative boats are slowly wafted through the single-level water course by a gentle current, made by a machine which drives a paddle wheel.

Dreamland featured a River Caves ride from 1924 to 1984. There are now only two original River Caves dark rides left in this country, one at Blackpool and the other in storage for the Dreamland amusement park.
